20A – Growing Your Social Capital

Establish contact with three new people, who will be valuable to helping you pursue your business idea.

I was unable to get responses from two people for this exercise; however, I was able to speak with Dana, a student government leader here at UF. We have taken the same Chinese classes together for the past two semesters and recently became good friends. I believe she is the best person for me to know since she has all the right contacts when I start to get this ball rolling. I would describe her as the "market expert" in a sense because of this reason.

How will this experience shape how you participate in any future networking events? Did this experience differ from your networking experiences in the past? How?

I believe knowing Dana will open up my options and broaden my network spectrum so to speak. I do think this experience differed from other networking experiences because there is more research involved and one must target individual people to speak with.

  1. Rana, I also had trouble finding people to interview for this! It is more difficult than it seems. It sounds like Dana is the perfect person to know to get your idea going. It is lucky that you met her in your class! I wonder what she would think of this idea and the practicality of it since she probably has experience working with other things in student government.

  2. Hey Rana, great job with your interviews. I understand how difficult it was to come in contact with three new people for these interviews, so I think you did a really creative job. Speaking to a UF student government leader is a great way to gage the student body's perception of your idea as she is definitely a market expert. Great job!

  3. Hey Rana,
Finding people for this assignment did prove to be a difficulty for me as well. Regardless, you did a good job of finding someone who you believe fit at least one of the "expert" categories! I think your friend can provide you with a good amount of resources and people to go to if you need help with your idea in the future. Ultimately, your "market expert" will give you different networking opportunities, which is key for entrepreneurship!

  4. Hi Rana! This assignment drove me crazy trying to find people as well. I think Dana sounds like a great person for this assignment. Although you could not find enough people, I think the person you found gave you helpful information.
